Now that the 2010 Winter Olympic Games have finally arrived, it’s time to get the family together around the high-definition television to watch the events, cheer on the athletes and marvel at the breathtaking beauty of Whistler and Vancouver.

And if watching all that athletic prowess and skill inspires you to get off the couch and take up a new winter sport – be it snowboarding, slalom racing, curling or hockey – you might want to start by trading the remote for a gamepad and participating in your own winter fun from the comfort of your living room.

In Sega’s Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, for example, kids (and kids at heart) can compete in more than 25 official events – such as speed skating, bobsleigh and downhill skiing – as their favourite video game mascots. That would include Mario, Luigi, Sonic, Tails, Princess Peach, Yoshi and Donkey Kong.

This Nintendo Wii exclusive also includes over-thetop fantasy events for you and up to three friends to tackle, inspired by the familiar worlds of Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog.

Ubisoft Montreal, on the other hand, has once again collaborated with Olympic gold medallist Shaun White in Shaun White Snowboarding: World Stage, a Nintendo Wii arcade sports game that challenges you to hit the slopes with White and his crew as they carve powder in locations ranging from Canada and the U.S. to Japan and France.

Break out the Wii Balance Board, hop on and pull off sick moves while taking on 75 increasingly challenging missions, such as a half pipe in the middle of New York’s Times Square. Spread out over eight huge mountains, the entire single-player game can be played with a buddy beside you in drop-in-and-out co-operative play, as well as some head-to-head modes for competitive types.

If you’re an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 owner, EA Canada’s latest and greatest hockey game brings passion and emotion to the ice, as players lace up and vie for the Stanley Cup using brute force, speed and finesse.

As with its stellar predecessors, NHL 10 lets you play a quick pickup game and pit your favourite team against its rival, such as the Toronto Maple Leafs versus the Montreal Canadiens. Several new modes add depth to the game, including a lengthy “Battle for the Cup” story campaign, an all-new general manager mode that allows you to scout and trade players and hire staff, and online multiplayer matches so you can play with your friends – even in another city. This near-photorealistic sequel also lets you brawl with players on the other team. Yep, fisticuffs from a first-person perspective, no less.
