Hockey Night In Canada starts again at the beginning of October, the NBA springs into action at the end, and in between there is football and the World Series. Get in the game by revisiting great sports movies.

SUGAR (2009)
Algenis Perez Soto is Sugar Santos, a young Dominican pitcher who makes it to the minor leagues in the Midwest, where the American Dream turns out to be more of a nightmare.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (2004)
There’s nothing happening in Odessa, Texas, except high school football, and the Permian Panthers are the lacklustre town’s last unifying cause. The movie is set in 1988, when one of the star players gets injured and the coach (Billy Bob Thornton) has to motivate his team to keep it together.

JERRY MAGUIRE (1996)
The movie that gave us the phrases “Show me the money” and “You had me at hello” stars Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Renée Zellweger.
Cruise plays a sports agent who grows a conscience and, as a result, loses all his clients but one.

TIN CUP (1996)
A romantic comedy about golf. No, seriously. Kevin Costner is a has-been golfer who cracks the U.S. Open, Don Johnson is the cocky polished pro and Rene Russo is the woman they both want.

HOOSIERS (1986)
Can a small-town basketball team win the Indiana high school state championship? Toss in Gene Hackman as the coach and Dennis Hopper as the town drunk, and you’ve got a winner.

SLAP SHOT (1977)
A losing hockey team starts to win big after letting the Hanson Brothers unleash their brand of violence and mayhem on the ice. Paul Newman stars as a player/coach. Sadly, Universal intends to remake the film in 2012. How about casting Chris Simon, Marty McSorley and Todd Bertuzzi as the Hanson Brothers?
