Vampire boyfriend or werewolf boyfriend? Decisions, decisions.
Robert Pattinson has had young women around the world under his spell for some time now as Edward Cullen, the sullen, angst-ridden vampire with the sexy bed-head in the Twilight series. And vampire Sookie-suitors Bill Compton and Eric Northman (played by Stephen Moyer and Alexander Skarsgård) have amassed legions of devoted followers in each of their respective camps over the last two seasons of True Blood.
But now, with Taylor Lautner’s turn as Jacob Black the teenage werewolf, or the more mature, smouldering and ruggedly handsome Benicio Del Toro about to sink his canines into his role as a werewolf in The Wolfman, the above question – posed on everything from T-shirts to buttons, teddy bears and even fridge magnets – begs to be answered.
Let’s compare, shall we?
Vampire Boyfriend Pros
+ Very committed. In Bram Stoker's Dracula, the vampire's commitment to his wife lasted
TrueBlood’s Bill Compton continues to pone for his deceased wife 100-plus years later.
+ Universally accepted to be the most charming and seductive in the supernatural/monster realm.
+ Given that he is 'undead' he won't age, meaning he'll remain as hot and sexy as the day you met him (also a con, see below).
Vampire Boyfriend Cons
- That wan, heroin chic look isn't for everyone.
- Only drinks blood, making romantic dinners somewhat one-sided.
- Sunny afternoon picnics or lazy days on the beach together are out of the question.
- He doesn't age. So he gets to keep looking fabulous while you get old and wrinkled.
- His utter devotion and need to constantly be rescuing you or mysteriously showing up in your room to watch you sleep could to feel start clingy.
Werewolf Boyfriend Pros
+ He may seem like a regular guy, but you know he can be overcome by unbridled animal lust at any time.
+ Not harmed by sunlight so, unlike with vampires, day outings aren’t a problem
+ Can enjoy a nice steak dinner together (this is more or less true regardless of the form he has taken in the moment).
+ Will age slowly and get sick less often due to natural ability to heal more quickly than humans so he won’t get the sniffles and become whiny.
+ Will keep you warm at night.
+ He rips his off clothes every time he transforms, which gives you an excuse to hit the malls together
Werewolf Boyfriend Cons
- Moody. One minute, he's a normal, nice, regular boyfriend; the next, a hairy, in a really bad mood bloodthirsty beast.
- Romantic, moonlit walks could be potentially dangerous.
- His howling would keep you up at night.
- His saliva could turn you into a werewolf so kissing is not without its challenges.
- While werewolves do age, they do so more slowly than humans so he will continue to look hot well after you’re not.
- Sensitivity to silver meants eating with plastic cutlery and an inability to shower you with gifts of silver jewelry
- Extreme five-o’clock shadow
- His hair gets into everything.
