The Wire
Famous for its cold openers, The Wire
didnt
disappoint in its Season Four premiere,
Episode 38, The Boys of Summer. Felicia
Snoop
Pearson, a lanky androgynous kid with
cornrows, lopes through a home
improvement box store with a nail gun
slung over her shoulder like a rifle.
Customers bolt out of her way, but a
brave and earnest salesman approaches
and asks Snoop the standard purchase
questions home use, construction, many
jobs? The exchange is at once hilarious
and ominous the longer they discuss
the superior traits of the DX 46: a
fully automatic, powder-activated gun
with a .27 caliber charge the clearer
it becomes that the kid and the salesman
are discussing not a home renovation
tool, but a weapon.
The new season is split between the
street, the school, and the hall. The
most promising character is Councilman
Thomas
Tommy
Carcetti, an acerbic, complex,
idealistic and grasping politician. His
extremely non-glamorous grind as an
underdog candidate for mayor is
distilled in a
dialing
for dollars
scene in which Tommy shoots darts, ogles
a tattered poster of a pin-up girl and
calls up his buddies in avoidance of
making the fundraising calls.
